Title: The Worst Sin
Post by: King Kong on September 04, 2013, 01:05:51 AM
Let this be your only warning for the worst sin on Pandora.

I have had reports of vet players taking advantage of other vets by making new chars, and pretending to be brand new players and getting all this free stuff from them.

This is the worst kind of person who has zero respect for our shard and players. I don't want you here.

If I catch you doing this, and I will as I will check all associated accounts and logs of that new player if a vet gives you stuff... you will be perma banned in an instant. - No questions asked.

Vets - I know I spoke to most of you, but whenever you do help a new player out, send me their exact name for me to scout them. (Exact name as in caps, lower-cases, etc.)

Helping a new player is how this shard grows and the core way we can survive. Those who abuse this are scum. Let this be your only warning.

sad, but not even slightly surprising.

the community here is amazingly generous.  it's really unlike any other UO experience I've ever had :P

I always think that when I am offering new players help.  Usually the first thing I do when I see a new player is give them a check for 1 millions and most times a lot of other items as well.  Obviously I would rather keep the money and sell the stuff so I can continue to build myself up but I know how hard it is to get started.  Also if by me helping someone from another shard once keeps them on our shard and helps it to continue to grow it is worth it in my eyes.

Jason I couldn't agree more.  Giving aid with gold, some gear an perhaps a nice home helps set the tone for our community of players.  Most of the new players I've come across have played with friends on other shards and still keep in touch with them.  Nothing like word of mouth to help as well.  This is a target demographic to help bring other player to us. Just when I think I'm doing something good I have to be aware of possibly being taken advantage of.  Glad I saw this post.

It's nice to help for the sake of helping.  The new vet players coming in know what it took to get the gold , gear etc and are very appreciated. The new players quickly realize how much help they recieved.  I hope I wasn't duped by helping someone who was taking advantage of my generosity.   Like Kon said "Scum".

Agreed, I have often wondered if I had been scammed in the past, I.used to buy new players homes, but now I don't have too as Kon gives them a new home.  People have always been very generous on this shard, , I like to get them in the guild before I go all out with money and imbueing......Nigel

Really?..... Why would you even want to do this? Isn't most of the fun of this game, building as you go?...I mean...we don't even have to build skills anymore (which I don't like)!!!  I mean...sheesh...

I used to help out new players often, but then I stopped because I'd give them so much and do so much for them, and they'd stop playing or turn into a jerk. So now if we recruit someone into the guild, and I get to know them a bit...then I'll go all out for them. I don't mind at all. We save up equipment for this very purpose. But I did not know that veteran players were making new characters and asking other vets for things. How sad.

And honestly, this is the EASIEST shard I've ever played to start up on. Especially now, that you get what, 100k? and a house deed? and all GM skills? Really no excuse why you can't go out and farm your own gold easily.

This is a great post for new and vet players alike, Kon taking a stand to protect our vet players while making sure we as vets can offer help to new players to our server without the thought of is this all for nothing or am I being scammed.. I applaud your actions on this topic and back them 100% King.. our vets are some of the most freely giving players I've ever seen! this makes me happy to know we're also being looked out for here!

Yes. But you have a long way to go from a couple mil checks and small house on you. --

Many players, have played UO over and over again, shard after shard. It is a genre game.. Most of us had played OSI growing up, taking 6 months to GM 1 skill -- We been there done that. -- Some people still like to do that, but 90% I have found over 5 years do not. -- They want to play, explore, pvp, pvm, etc.

I like your way of thinking tho. Old School.  :P

when i started it took me months to convince kitti and some others that i wasnt chicken, lol.
they all thought "that person" was the kind of joke chicken would play and because i never asked anyone for anything they figured i must already have it all lol..
i try to help new players where i can, some will bug you for the very shirt off your back, but its the ones who are determined to do it all themselves that i shower with money and aid, they will try to refuse items and i will just drop it on the floor and say "if you dont take it ill just let it rot" hehe

hahah nice to hear I've been mistaken for such a loyal Pandorian... and I agree TP the ones who wont take a "handout" are the ones I go after as well.. and I quote handout cause I don't feel that's what it is when try'n to get a new player started here.. but I have been think hard about this topic and IMO only I feel that UO isn't the only game some of these players are playing.. it almost feel like some ppl and not all or even close to that.. I mean a small fraction of ppl seem to find intrest in getting over on there fellow players for some reason.. with sooo much to do on Pandora, you'd think how do they find the time?? lol

I ignore the beggers and look for people hunting and help them out with gear or drop a check for them..sometimes just a total random check hehe

What about those people always PK and rob players in Fel Champ? And this behavior is spreading to other guild members. Yes, it is just a game, but their motivation of prevent others from doing champ is just for control resource, dont want others to get PS.

Plain and simple Fel is a pvp zone, I dont pvp but thats just the nature of the game

Agreed, in Fel its Risk = Reward, but for those of us that are just tired of it, would be nice to add some more champs to the Tram areas.....Maybe less reward....Nigel
Title: Re: The Worst Sin

I admit being pk'd at champs does suck but it happens it is what the game is about.  But it does bring action to the game and gets you motivation to get better in order to take out those players.

There also is some pks who will kill you yes but they wont loot you or grief you by rez killing.  Very few will do that.  Again some of the same people who used to pk me all the time have a very hard time doing it now and that is because I had the motivation to get better to prevent that.

Being raided at a champ is part of the game. I'm pretty sure it's happened to all of us at least once. I've  even been party of a raiding party.

It's the people who grief players while doing it that piss me off.

I am known fairly well as a very poor PVP player, I dont use macros nor do I use many Hot keys, so Im an easy target.
I have had experiances where a player has seen me in Fel and said "Oh, its you Nigel hehe" and not attacked me, thats always fun, also nothing more fun then Bumping into Grim and he just smiles :) at me.

I guess people just know I hate to PVP, I usually only go to battles just to see how long I can fly without getting killed.
I try to go to PVP when they call for needed players and am in shock when i actually win, not very often.
I am friends with a lot of the players who like to PVP, most are not rez killers or looters and some will even Rez you after the kill, I have great respect for them.
The greifers are a dimished breed here on Pandora, and usually the other players take care of them all in good time.

I do enjoy watching a good battle, and appreciated Draks invite to Spirit just watch him, Clean and others go at it, it makes me appreciate just how good they all are at it.

Anyways, just thought I would share a bit of my experiances with all of you, hope you enjoyed it, see you all tonite....Nigel

Another annoyance on this which I have been experiencing a lot from 1 player not to use any names is constantly asking for handouts.  This player has been on the server longer than me and will not leave me alone asking for free imbues/gear/gold/pcoins/help pvping people etc.  Again not using any names but I am sure everyone knows exactly who this is.  Again I don't mind helping but when realizing how much I have given this player gets outrageous.  Than of course ignoring or telling them no doesn't work cause either he spams World chat/PM spams or just shows up at my castle and waits for me :(.

never feel required to help people imo jason.  help them if you want, and help them more if they're genuinely appreciative and you enjoy helping people.

to be genuinely appreciative though, they should value what you give them and not EXPECT you to give them more.  ever.  if they do and can't take the hint that you're slowing down/stopping the handouts, feel free to tell them to take a flying leap.  you wouldn't be burning any bridges that shouldn't be burned anyways.

heck, i'm new so i'm still building my own little powerbase, and someone kept bugging me to meet him places or go pvp or go blahblahblah and i finally just got stern with him.  i might not have many tangible resources to share yet (altho i have with noobs myself), but i still value my time, and if you're demanding i spend it with you in some certain way, over and over and over again, i'm gonna tell you to piss off eventually.  and i would certainly do so much quicker with someone if they're not a real noob, but just someone needy and demanding.  i'd suggest the same... mainly because you're a giving person and there's better people who deserve generous you instead of "sucked dry by 1-3 greedy players" you.

I've taken the approach lately to be as nice as I can and let them know that its time for them to start working for themselves.  I have even dragged them with me on p coin runs, and made them pound out some armour while I watched.  I think part of it is the age, I know there are some young players who just want everything handed to them.   I try to be patient, and teach so they realize at some point you have to work for it or you will have no friends here.  If I felt I was  truely being taken advantage of I would not hessitate reporting it......Nigel

ya agreed a lot of it is just the age.

cloning runebooks of pcoin mobs/minis might be an idea.  with a decent weapon and some resist/lrc gear and jewelry/talisman, you can manage to get yourself enough of a start here.

anyways OT i like that the people who run this shard take such a hard stance against a lot of the horribleness that often comes from UO sandbox.  after years of playing servers like IPY, it's refreshing not having to wonder the newest way someone's gonna find to screw me over (noto killing/baiting, stool barriers, blahblahblah... it's HORRIBLE).

I'm gonna go ahead and take advantage of this subject for advertising purposes;

Pandora Supplies, in South West Luna, is always stocked with almost anything a new player could want. The only thing i don't carry that much of is gear, mostly cause i need to sleep at some point. But, Clean Your Soul vendors in North Luna carry tons of runic gear. You want to help new players, point them in the right direction, South West Luna that is.  8)

No I don't have any issue.  Unless someone stole my account or abused counselor status to grief me or something, I couldn't imagine needing to contact you for anything.  When I was talking about the horrible stuff before, it's stuff I knew well from IPY, not here.  UO existence in a place like IPY is "find the most creative way to exploit and screw over the other guy", with the community applauding particularly creative efforts, or at least adopting some in order to compete.  Griefing wasn't just a problem there, it was a constant fact of life.

Which is why I like what you do here.  What I mentioned before was aimed at the nice guys who aren't as good at putting up boundaries with people who clearly need them.  I'm sure after running a UO shard for a while that you and your staff know all about putting up stern and clear boundaries :p

We are human, sometimes we get mad, say things we don't mean just in anger. I am guilty of it as anyone, therefore I cannot pass a permanent punishment myself or I would be the hypocrite.

A sorry and a hi-five goes a long way.. It is just a beautiful game, we're not saving lives though.  :)

Thank you for the kind words..... Nigel.

that right there is 100% correct and why i respect the staff here vastly more than alot of games/shards i have played in the past, and it is true for every single person.
