Shard Changes / Re: [PENDING] Publish 49.4
September 20, 2013, 09:52:08 PM
I imagine he has his reasons, but either way it's hard to knock on UO for speed rules.  People can swing swords more than once every 1.25s on the fast end, but it's there for a gameplay reason.

If there's a gameplay/balance reason for a change to archery, I imagine it has little to do with real-life physics.

I've taken the approach lately to be as nice as I can and let them know that its time for them to start working for themselves.  I have even dragged them with me on p coin runs, and made them pound out some armour while I watched.  I think part of it is the age, I know there are some young players who just want everything handed to them.   I try to be patient, and teach so they realize at some point you have to work for it or you will have no friends here.  If I felt I was  truely being taken advantage of I would not hessitate reporting it......Nigel

ya agreed a lot of it is just the age.

cloning runebooks of pcoin mobs/minis might be an idea.  with a decent weapon and some resist/lrc gear and jewelry/talisman, you can manage to get yourself enough of a start here.

anyways OT i like that the people who run this shard take such a hard stance against a lot of the horribleness that often comes from UO sandbox.  after years of playing servers like IPY, it's refreshing not having to wonder the newest way someone's gonna find to screw me over (noto killing/baiting, stool barriers, blahblahblah... it's HORRIBLE).

never feel required to help people imo jason.  help them if you want, and help them more if they're genuinely appreciative and you enjoy helping people.

to be genuinely appreciative though, they should value what you give them and not EXPECT you to give them more.  ever.  if they do and can't take the hint that you're slowing down/stopping the handouts, feel free to tell them to take a flying leap.  you wouldn't be burning any bridges that shouldn't be burned anyways.

heck, i'm new so i'm still building my own little powerbase, and someone kept bugging me to meet him places or go pvp or go blahblahblah and i finally just got stern with him.  i might not have many tangible resources to share yet (altho i have with noobs myself), but i still value my time, and if you're demanding i spend it with you in some certain way, over and over and over again, i'm gonna tell you to piss off eventually.  and i would certainly do so much quicker with someone if they're not a real noob, but just someone needy and demanding.  i'd suggest the same... mainly because you're a giving person and there's better people who deserve generous you instead of "sucked dry by 1-3 greedy players" you.

I'd just like to throw out the fact that we still have an entire new facet to introduce to the game, which will see a major increase in imbuing resources on the market :)

Supply : Demand

i'm one of the many eagerly awaiting the new stuff, and totally enthralled with what you've accomplished here.  I have to say... the impressive thing to me is that for the first time in a long time, i feel like i have so many OPTIONS on stuff to do, instead of feeling like i should just go grind more balrons for gold or something.  (So of course i'm excited about the idea at what you're hinting here!)

I'm busily sorting through pcoin/o-coin mob loots, grabbing stuff to unravel, [grab'in after for trash coins, focusing on tasks like champs for ~hour, then moving on to other stuff or just chatting in game.  but what's great for me is that i have growth built into the whole process now, and i feel like i accomplish stuff whenever i go out and kill stuff.

Which is kinda why I started this thread in the first place.  Imbuing is THE major character growth on the server, so (i feel) noobs either need options for buying imbues/imbued gear at reasonable prices or the ability to imbue their own stuff and grow their own infrastructure (i prefer the latter since it's a more gradual growth process... heck i'd even recommend some sort of reward system for destroying fully imbued items so they don't saturate the market, assuming it was easier for everyone to do their own imbues).  After having done it myself, I'd recommend making imbue PS's fairly easy to get a hold of, but make the increases within imbuing harder to come by... the easiest way to do that would be to remove gains on unraveling stones, imo.  that way people get gains only when they imbue stuff... it'll be slow work getting to the established position, but at least it'll be a slow-and-steady progress instead of this giant wall of "sorry no imbue PSs", and then a huge burst in growth once that wall is overcome.

last paragraph is merely my opinion on a kink i ran into in the awesomeness of this shard.  it's your (successful) server so obviously you have a much better feel for what's needed and what's not, i just figured i'd leave my feedback and let you do your thing, even if that's leaving alone imbuing.  thanks again for your hard work!

hahaha you've all assisted me already.

I'm Soda Popinski in game.  for the record, this is where the character name came from (it's an old nes game called Mike Tyson's Punchout) -

ya i'm sticking it out.  someone actually pointed out some imbue scrolls for sale on vendors for a few mil and i spent my fortune on those.

i'll feel better now that i'm more self sufficient, thanks all!  i can actually feel power increasing which is what was really missing before now!

hmmm... i guess i have to either accept that UO is no longer a game you can play solo, or move on to something else.

but man it ruffles my feathers that the sandbox "play it your way" UO isn't really a thing anymore.  i can't really play it my way... i have to treat it like some sort of WoW raiding guild/grind.

thanks for the responses all, especially the people typing on their phones!

thanks guys, i appreciate the help.

I'm just wondering if this is part of the reason there's a low pop here, and not a lot of new people.  it's pretty easy for established people to farm whatever they need to, but pretty hard for new players to start building up their power.

i'm sure it was harder back before the 100 allskills stuff, but it also makes it so there's not as much advancement.  it'd be more enjoyable to me if i could advance imbuing... the actual climb would be far harder than for established (as it should be), since i don't have their powerbase, but at least it would feel like a climb.

sorry it's hard to see the point in all that whine.

the point is if i had access to imbue PSs, i feel like i could be advancing the main path to power on the shard.  without those scrolls, i feel a lot more hamstrung and wasteful, throwing away piles of crystals and other valuable mats that are supremely difficult for me to get.

i think part of the reason the population is low here is because new people don't have that feeling of advancement.  i'm not advancing my characters in the main area (imbuing), and it's frustrating watching piles of mats disappear to fails with no gain to myself.  whereas if i could be character building in this area, i'd feel like i was making constant progress, even if it wasn't fast and extremely expensive time and resource wise.

General Discussion / Imbuing, the life blood of the shard
September 11, 2013, 09:59:10 AM
And a real pain in the toosh to get rolling as a new player.  I've been playing a little under two weeks now, and a number of people and the shard in general has been very helpful and kind in getting me rolling.

But... the way things are set up, it's REALLY hard to be self-sufficient.  I don't WANT to depend on others for things.  I should be able to build up power like the established community, and work my way forward.  UO for a lot of us is setting up self-sufficiency, not dependency.

Here's the problem: I can't advance imbuing.  my imbue fails are rugged, since you can fail at various parts of the process.  I can't get imbue PSs because the NPCs for imbue quests were removed.  No one is selling the imbue PSs (i've tried since i started).  I can't do champs alone because I don't have the imbues.  what I *DO* imbue is obviously not going to be the best gear anyways, since I don't have the base artis or gears yet.

Yes, I can continue to throw away valuable mats at imbue attempts, but I don't see why I shouldn't be allowed to advance the most important skill on the shard, and forced to struggle with such horrific fail rates when i can't farm efficiently yet.  if i had imbue PSs, i wouldn't feel like i'm "throwing away" mats... i'd at least be advancing even when i fail.  i'd be feeling like i was progressing.  it just doesn't atm, not without at least being able to raise imbuing.  and yes, i could get other people to do my imbues for me, but like i said before, a lot of us play UO to be independent, not dependent.  I don't like imposing on others, and i'm sitting on probably 10-15 imbues atm and would rather look through my crafting menu and do it myself, not have someone sit there while i slowly pick out my best options.

sad, but not even slightly surprising.

the community here is amazingly generous.  it's really unlike any other UO experience I've ever had :P

that gives me tons to work with man, thanks!

i'll have to work with what i have and start building towards a suit, thanks!
#29
thanks!  I'll probably join NPA since that seems to make the most sense, but I figured I'd ask here on the forums for something more specific.  I looked through the forums pretty heavily and didn't see anything relating to general "roam around and kill stuff" "builds".

That way you can at least point towards a forum post if people feel overwhelmed by all the information.

And i *did* play a shard a couple years back for a bit that had the samurai and necro stuff in it, so i'm loosely familiar with that, but how to combine it with all the new stuff is a bit... much.

If someone didn't mind listing out a few key abilities they use a lot, it'd help for when I get off work later and immerse myself in UO for hours on end like the days of old! :)

Hey all!  Got the UO itch again and found myself here.  I like the idea of the server, and I've already been fooling around with it some, but it's been years since I played anything but t2a or earlier and I'm struggling with figuring out what buffs I should be keeping active and how best to take advantage of all these extra skills.  To say nothing of all the new special abilities!

What things are "standard" casts you keep up all the time?  or at least for big fights?  are there different "builds" for different things, like champs, or is there just one major OP set of skill combinations that really stacks well?

Of note: i'm used to barding and taming, so i'm incorporating that easily enough.  but I'm struggling more with what to cast when and what's worth the hassle.  I figure if i can build up a beefy enough main character I can explore well enough to build up gold and stuff.  Thanks!
