Title: Internet Issues
Post by: Pete on April 20, 2011, 11:02:46 AM
I like to run my computer all night, but every 6-12 hours or so, the connection drops out (if only for a second).

Has anyone got any ideas about stopping this from happening?

Yup, Ive had this same prob for the last few months, with it getting very bad this last few days.
Contact your ISP and tell them your not happy with the service they provide.

In less than 24 hours, ive rung them, had an engineer out from Talk Talk who got an engineer out from BT to sort the prob.  Fast reliable internet once again    :D

Thats not help Ely!

I think its a software issue, where the computer / router / modem is forcing me to renew my credentials

i.e. a dynamic ip..?  still shouldn't be changing that often, though.  before you moan to your isp:

what's the status on your router when you dc?  is the dsl light still on/good to go, or a warning colour?  and the network light for your pc.

try another router.

check your firewall/internet security settings (i found AVG to = dc if i let it try and judge for itself whether it should run scans and downloads in background or as a priority).

remove/check/clean your network card.  when you're dc'd, what, if any icons or pop up msgs do you get in systray?

are you running power saving modes on your computer?  are they set to cut power to certain components after x:y:z idle time?

I had this issue about a year ago.  It turned out to be the firmware on my router needing to be updated.  However, you should definitely rule out other issues before updating router firmware.  Unnecessary updates can screw up your router badly.
