How herding can be a useful and fun skill!

I felt the need to post this because upon looking at the skills on the wiki, I saw that it was considered to be useless. Well, I'm here to not only say that its untrue, but tell you how it can be used. Plus, using this method you only need three skills to use it along with a shepherds crook.

First of all, what is Herding? This is from UOGuide:

Herding allows players to direct the movement of any tamable creature. They can either be moved to a specific location or made to follow your character indefinitely. Unlike conventional pets there is no known limit to the amount of herded creatures you may have following you at one time, though they won't travel with you through moongates.
Herded monsters may still decide to attack nearby characters, however it is possible to herd while remaining hidden. A stealthing character can potentially escort a very large group of dangerous monsters (though their movements will likely give away his location to nearby players).
Your chance of success when giving an order is equal to that of your current skill level. The taming difficulty of your target creature has no effect and there is no wait time between attempts.
Area effect peacemaking will stop creatures from following you."

Now you may be asking yourself, how on earth do you find that useful? If you use the skills Hiding, Stealth, and Herding combined, you can easily isolate tamable creatures to a dungeon entrance or other safe/chosen spot. Once you do this, you're able to try and tame the creature, kill it, or play chess with it if you want, without worrying about nearby spawns bothering you.

An easy step by step process on how to do this is followed:

1. Enter hiding/stealth mode. This will allow you to make your way to the animal you wish to tame unscathed.

2. Once you're at your target, if you haven't already, equip your Shepard's Crook.

3. Double click your Crook, and then when asked to choose a target, click on the tamable creature you wish to attempt to tame.

4. Once this is done you will be asked where you want the creature to go. If you click a nearby destination it will go there, but what you want to do is target yourself in order to get the creature to follow you. This will be similar to having an already tamed creature following you, except it will move around freely staying a tile away from you.

5. Lead the creature to the location of your choice. This will take a little bit of patience because they will not follow you at the same speed as a normal tamed creature would guarding you.

6. Be sure to keep it following you, repeating steps 2-4 as needed. If you see that the creature turns around or is lead astray, again, simply re-double click your Crook, then the target, then yourself.

I'm new to the server and last I played was an ML server with no newer or custom creatures. As you can suspect, on my way to tame a White Wyrm, I was surprised by a 'red named' mob who treated himself to some fried platypus. I went and bought a Shepard's Crook, went back to Ice Dungeon and tamed me my first White Wyrm here.

Many veterans might find these methods a bit redundant, but you'd be surprised how often it can come in handy, especially if there's a Greater Dragon camping at your body because you forgot they spawn at Destard. =D

You can also have a lot of fun with it considering there isn't necessarily a cap to how many creatures you have following you at one time. So if you feel like taking all of the Drakes, Dragons, and Greater Dragons in Destard to one location, say an entrance, and remain hidden, you can imagine the potential hilarity that it could bring for some of you reds out there.


I'm not sure if anyone else actually uses the skill, but I'm curious to hear if anyone does and if you have any stories worth mentioning about it.

I use stealth herding to coax the cu sidhe out of the sandy region and into a safer zone to tame it.. Works a treat

I'm glad to already see another that uses the skill.  I feel like its usefulness is underrated.
